Reveille is the official mascot of Texas A&M University, known as the “First Lady of Aggieland.” She is a purebred Rough Collie, a tradition that began with Reveille III in 1966, and all subsequent Reveilles have been of this breed. The current mascot, Reveille X, has been serving since May 2021. The Reveille tradition started in 1931 when cadets found an injured mixed-breed dog, named her Reveille after she barked during the morning bugle call, and made her the official mascot the following football season. As the highest-ranking member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, she wears five silver diamonds on her maroon-and-white blanket, outranking the Corps Commander. Cared for by a sophomore cadet from Company E-2, known as the “mascot corporal,” Reveille attends classes, football games, and various events. Traditions include cadets addressing her as “Miss Rev, ma’am,” and if she barks in class, the professor may dismiss it, though this is not mandatory. She’s a beloved symbol of Aggie spirit, loyalty, and camaraderie.

Americans’ attitude toward dogs changed during the twentieth century partly thanks to author and Collie breeder Albert Payson Terhune. His books were widely reprinted from the 1920s into the 1970s and taught generations of readers to treat their dogs with patience, empathy, and common sense. He also advocated for the value of female dogs as housepets, for the compassionate care of senior dogs, and for giving dogs with disabilities a chance at a normal life.
Terhune’s home, “Sunnybank,” was on the shore of Pompton Lake in Northern New Jersey. The grounds are now a public park that is popular with both local residents and Collie lovers from around the country, who come to visit the scenes of Terhune’s stories and pay tribute at the memorials of the Collies who inspired them.
Nearly every Champion-line Collie in the United States and Canada today can be traced back through the generations to Terhune’s Sunnybank Collies, including Bruce, Treve, and Gray Dawn!
