Founded on August 26, 1886, in New York, the Collie Club of America held its first “Sweepstakes” during March 22nd through the 25th 1887. There were 44 entries; the judges were Messrs. A.S. Apgar and James Mortimer. This was held in conjunction with the New Jersey Kennel Club. Several shows were held with Westminster, with our first National Specialty being held in 1894 in New York and judged by Mr. Robert McEwin. 1909 the CCA Specialty Show was held in conjunction with WMKC and judged by Mr. John Black, on February 9th . 1915 a “Specialty Show” was held at the estate of Mrs. Mae H M Curdy, as the New Brunswick Charity Kennel Club Show, the judge was John H. Blackwood. 1926- The American Kennel Club Dog Show held at the Sesqui-Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia, PA on Sept. 30 through October 2nd, the judge was G. B. Hungerford. 1928 – was the great $1000 Collie Show held in conjunction with the Newark Kennel Club Show. As far as Collies were concerned this may as well be their Specialty Show, the judge was Mrs. C.M. Lunt. The CCA had 8 shows held at Morris & Essex between 1929 and 1941.
In 1986 we celebrated our 100th year! The National Specialty Show was in Chicago and what a stellar event it was. The judging was done by past CCA Presidents, Mr. Ted Paul judged Dogs, William Brokken judged Bitches, John Honig judged Rough Best of Variety, John Linderman judged Smooth Best of Variety, and Ralph Morrison did Best of Breed, with an entry of 1195 combined. 125 years was hosted in Tulsa with an entry of 846 combined, Best of Breed judged by William Brokken.
The Collie Cub of America’s past 22 Nationals have had an average entry for confirmation, obedience, and rally of 833. This does not include our herding and agility events. Our highest being 2007 in Concord NC with an entry of 1476 combined, Best of Breed judged by Ms. Shelly Roos. 2001 in Louisville with an entry of 1202 combined, and Best of Breed judged by Mr. Al Forthal, this was our 115-year Anniversary. The number 3 largest was 2016 in Louisville with an entry of 1123 combined, with Best of Breed judged by Mrs. Mary Wells. This was our 130th Anniversary.
We are currently holding our 112th National Specialty Show in Ft. Wayne Indiana, on March 25 through April 1st. This is a week-long event which consists of the following:
Confirmation, Jr. Showmanship, Obedience, Rally, Herding, Agility, Most Versatile Collie, Breeder of the Year (both varieties), Tuff Quest, Collie Rescue, Collie Health Foundation dinner and auction, along with daily silent auctions. Welcome Party, Top 10 (actually 40) confirmation rough and smooth, juniors, and performance, Judges Education’, Breed Education, Shining Star Ambassador, Quarter Century Dinner with Hall of Fame inductees and the Right Stuff award, AKC Good Sportsmanship Award and the Presidents Gala on Saturday night when the National Trophies are awarded to their recipients.
